Fund to Help Care For Abused Puppy Tops $20,000

BELOIT - More than $20,000 has been donated to the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin in honor of Sunny.
The 11-month-old golden retriever puppy scalded by boiling water in early December has been receiving daily medical care at the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin since Dec. 14, according to Society Executive Director Brett Frazier.
Because of the nature of her injuries, Sunny has to be put under general anesthesia and is typically at the society for five to six hours a day.
"She's had multiple surgeries and she will have many more," he said.
Frazier said the dog will likely lose parts of her ears because they were damaged so badly.
"There are some early indicators when tissue is dying. It starts to look like bruising and that is present with her ears and other areas," he said.
However, the majority of the dog's body is healing. She's on pain relief medication and is starting to show her personality.
"She likes to be around people, and we think she's going to be a happy dog again once she's feeling better," Frazier said.
Sunny will likely be treated for a few more months before she will be up for adoption.
"She's going to come out the other side a happy healthy dog," he said. "We will make sure to find her a safe and loving home."
Frazier commended staff for taking on the additional workload of caring for Sunny along with the organization's roughly 25 spay/neuter surgeries a day.
Frazier said the more than $20,000 raised for the care of the dog will go to the Help Me Heal Me fund through the Society to help animals which need special procedures and care.
The costs of caring for Sunny's medical care, Frazier said, will be billed to the owner as part of the ongoing court proceedings.
"We'll issue an invoice for care which will be paid," he said. "It doesn't take away liability of costs."
Frazier encourages people who want to help animals to consider making donations to the Help Me Heal Me Fund or sponsoring an animal for $35 a month. Although Sunny has been sponsored several times over, he said most animals at the society do not get sponsored. For more information visit www.petsgohome.org.
