You Can't Buy Love, But You Sure Can Adopt It |
While you may not be able to buy love this Valentine's Day, you sure can adopt it!
To celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, we’re hosting an adoption special all week long!! And over the weekend!! Starting February 10th through February 16th, you can come in, fall in love with a new furry friend, and then choose a candy heart. The color of candy heart you choose will determine the adoption fee you pay to bring your new furry friend home (ranging from $0-$25)! We also have the lobby decorated for some really cute photo ops post-adoption!
This is already all pretty exciting, but ON TOP OF these special adoption rates, our friends at The Diamond Center are offering $50 gift cards to anyone who adopts from HSSW between February 10th and February 14th as part of their Love the Shines Forever event. This means that you can both adopt a new love into your life AND spoil yourself (or someone else) with some beautiful jewelry.
Additional fees beyond the adoption fee: City of Janesville licensing (if applicable), cat carrier (if not provided), leash and collar (if not provided). During this adoption event, adopters are still required to complete a standard adoption application as if it were a normal day. This adoption special pricing excludes Adoption Guaranteed pets. Special adoption prices do not apply to off-site adoption centers, like Petco.

Uh-Oh, I Found a Kitten! Now What?
|
We may still be in the thick of winter now, but soon enough it will be warm again and we will be welcoming in Kitten Season! Kitten Season is the time of year that we see many kittens born and coming in to HSSW - it is typically throughout the Spring/Summer months. During Kitten Season, it is not uncommon to come across a kitten (or two or three or four). While you may be overcome with excitement to find such precious bundles of joy, let's go over what to do if/when this happens. -
Are the kittens injured or ill?
- Get them to HSSW (or your local shelter) ASAP.
- How old are the kittens?
- 0-2 Weeks Old - Umbilical cord attached, eyes closed, & ears folded. (Umbilical cord falls off around four days old)
- 2-4 Weeks Old - Eyes open, teeth coming in & becoming mobile.
- 4-6 Weeks Old - Very mobile & talkative.
- 6-8 Weeks Old - Transitioning to adult eye color, very active & playful.
- Where is Mom?
-
A kitten's best chance of survival is with Mom. Leave the kittens where they are. Mom may be off hunting or in the process of moving them to a different location. It might be several hours before Mom returns and she may not do so until she no longer senses the presence of humans hovering near her litter.
-
DON'T KITTEN NAP! A quiet and warm kitten most likely means that they have recently been with their mother and recently fed. This implies that the mother will be coming back for them, so it would be best to leave them there. If the kittens are continually crying or are cold, it is a sign that they have not been fed recently and that they are most likely in need of assistance.
-
PRO TIP: Leave a ring of flour around the kittens. Check in a few hours if you see Mom's foot prints!
- What if Mom returns?
-
If Mom returns and you are able to contain both Mom and kittens, it is okay to bring them to HSSW. If you are unable to catch the kittens and their mother, then it is best to leave the kittens with her until they are weaned and able to eat on their own, which is usually 6-8 weeks old.
-
If you want to help, make sure mom has access to shelter, food & water. Once the kittens are weaned, it is okay to bring them into the shelter without their mom.
- What if Mom doesn't return?
-
If you have waited and Mom has not come back for the kittens, then it is okay to remove the kittens and bring them to HSSW. Call HSSW to confirm you found the kittens in a contracted jurisdiction and to give us a heads up that you will be brining them in.
- Consider fostering!
-
The shelter can get in a lot of kittens, especially during the summer months, and our foster homes can fill up quickly. Growing and maintaining our foster base is VERY important to our mission!

Other Tips for Surviving Kitten Season: - Neonate (0 days to 4 weeks) kittens are unable to regulate their body temp, so, it's important to keep them warm.
- Feed neonates KMR or kitten milk replacement milk.
-
NEVER feed a cold kitten. Warm them before you start feeding.
- NEVER feed kittens/cats cows milk, goats milk, etc.

CALLING ALL DOG LOVERS!
We need more dog foster homes! Our dogs benefit so much from being in foster care - they relax, they sleep better, they have better manners, and so much more. Dogs often find shelter life stressful as it is so much different than a traditional home. Foster homes helps us to replicate that home environment for dogs in our care, even if the stay in foster care is only temporary. Any time in a foster home is beneficial!
This is also beneficial to us at the shelter! When dogs head to foster care, we get to learn so much more about them and how they behave in a home environment. Because a shelter is so much stranger to a dog than a home is, they usually act quite a bit different here. That can make it a bit harder for us to get to know the dogs and all their quirks. However, with the valuable information we gain from their foster homes, we can do better matchmaking for these dogs with new families. To learn more and sign up to foster, visit us at https://www.petsgohome.org/volunteer-foster/foster-friends/
And if you need more reasons to sign up to foster, check out the incredible video above made by Rachel at the Shelter!
