Dog Walk Rules

  • All participating dogs must be currently licensed with proof of their Rabies (if over 4 months of age), Distemper, and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines.  Please check your records because even if you adopted from us, you may not have all the vaccinations required.  If an incident occurs, you must be able to produce proof in a reasonable amount of time.

  • For safety reasons, retractable leashes or electric collars will NOT be allowed.  Dogs must be kept on a leash at ALL times, with no exceptions. Leashes should be no more than six feet in length while on the walk.

  • Female dogs in heat are not permitted.

  • Participants are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs during the entire event.

  • Event officials and WHS staff reserve the right to refuse entry to any dog whose behavior could be dangerous to others.  Please use good judgment regarding the temperament of your dog so that this event will be safe and enjoyable for everyone.

  • No bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, etc. are permitted for safety reasons.

  • Baby strollers are permitted. Be sure that you and your dog are conditioned and in proper health for this event.

Paws by the River Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dog Walk a race?

No, the Dog Walk is not timed, so feel free to take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Traxler Park.

Can I still sign up for the Dog Walk if I do not have a dog?

Yes, everyone is welcome with or without a dog!

How do I register my whole family?

Children under 6 years old are free, however all other participants must have a ticket. Each ticket purchased is for one individual, so please be sure to purchase a ticket for everyone in your family.

Can I register the day of the event?

Yes, you can! We will not be able to guarantee that we have an event t-shirt for you in your preferred size though. If it is important for you to have an event t-shirt at the event, please be sure to register before September 1st.

Is my registration fee tax-deductible?

The IRS considers the entry fee for a charitable walk to be the price paid for attending and participating in the event, and, as such, the fee is not tax-deductible. However, anything donated above and beyond your Dog Walk registration fee is deductible.

Which vaccinations will my dog need to attend the Dog Walk?

All dogs need to be current on their Rabies (if over 4 months of age), Distemper, and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines before the walk. Please check your records because even if you adopted from us, you may not have all the vaccinations required.

What will you do with the money raised at Paws by the River?

This event is a fundraiser to close the gap between the City Of Janesville’s budget and the contract the City holds with HSSW. It is a mutual partnership event that will bring the whole community together to continue helping pets go home again. More specifically, the funding raised at this event will help to provide daily care, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, microchips, and any other care to the pets of HSSW while they await their forever homes.
