Does HSSW Provide Animal Control Services?
The Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin partners with many local municipalities to provide stray animal holding and care. For years, many people thought the Humane Society was the community’s government-regulated and funded animal control service. As a private, non-profit organization, the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin operates independently and is not governed or funded by any local municipality. We do realize, however, that animal control services within a community help improve the quality of life and safety for city residents and animals, promotes positive and responsible pet ownership, and helps reduce animal overpopulation.

If you have found a lost animal, please visit the following page: Can I Bring a Stray Animal to HSSW

Abused or Neglected Animals

Each township, village, county and city has its own reporting structure and enforcement policies on abuse and neglect cases. If you are concerned about the welfare of an animal, please call the local law enforcement agency to file a neglect or abuse complaint.

Wild Animals

We get a lot of calls about ducks in sewers, raccoons stuck in a garbage can, a bird fallen from a nest. And while we would love to help all animals in need, we are not licensed to respond to or care for wild animals. In the State of Wisconsin, care for wild animals may only be provided by licensed wildlife rehabilitators. If you have found a wild animal you believe is in need of assistance, please contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or the WI Department of Natural Resources.
